Student and Staff Illness

Currently, cold and flu illnesses are impacting most Washington communities. Absence rates overall are similar to those from other years.

The district has advised students and staff to use common sense preventive actions:

  • Wash hands or use sanitizer throughout the day, but especially before eating.
  • Avoid touching your face to prevent germs from contacting mouth, nose and/or eyes.
  • Students are encouraged to talk with their parent/guardian about getting a general flu and/or H1N1-specific flu vaccination.
  • Get plenty of rest and eat healthy food to help fight infection before it starts.

If students reach the point of feeling ill with a cough or sore throat and/or a fever, we’ve asked that they

  • Tell their teacher or office staff.
  • Stay home from school and other social activities until their temperature is normal for 24 hours (without medication) and they’re feeling better.

District Action

We are isolating students with flu symptoms while they wait for parent/guardian pick-up.

Classroom teachers and other staff are keeping a watchful eye on students, referring them to the office when they show symptoms of illness.

We have encouraged staff to stay home when ill to avoid spreading illness. We currently have enough substitutes to cover staff absences.

Custodial staff are cleaning and sanitizing surfaces throughout the district.

The district will consult with the Island County Health Department should there be a sharp increase in the number of student illnesses within the district, and follow their guidance.

2009-2010 Bus Route Schedules

Bus route schedules are now available for the current school year:

Should weather or road conditions make it unsafe to travel our regular routes, the following alternate schedule will be in place. The district will announce via emergency communications systems when it is necessary to follow emergency routes.

A quick summary of our district...

Our enrollment as of September 2009 was 1020 FTE (full time equivalent) students. See "About our Schools" for detailed school information.

Our rural community includes several county and state parks, as well as the Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve. Population centers include Coupeville, the county seat for Island County, and Greenbank. Residential developments in the county alternate with multiple-acre homesites, farms, prairies, and forested areas.

The Town of Coupeville has a healthy business and arts community. Fast food, movie theaters, and other entertainment options are in nearby Oak Harbor, about 15 minutes from Coupeville. Island Transit provides convenient transportation at no charge to riders. Major shopping malls are about an hour away, and Seattle can be reached in about 90 minutes.

Every aspect of our community benefits immensely from the work done by volunteers of all ages. We encourage service learning for our students, and we welcome volunteers in our schools.

Coupeville Community Education

Do you have experience teaching art, fitness, movement, dance, or sports? Do you have a great idea, hobby or something new to add to the community? Can you teach basket weaving, scuba diving or belly dancing? Do you have knowledge on topics that may be of interest to your community?

Coupeville School District is looking for individuals interested in offering their talent or knowledge to their community through the Coupeville Community Education Program. If you answered yes to any of the above questions and have something youd like to add to the schedule, contact Kim Andrews at 678-6222 or email kandrews@coupeville.k12.wa.us to request a class proposal packet.
