The Open Den program operates under House Bill 1418, approved by the state of Washington in 2014 as a public school, with a mission of assisting students in achieving a high school diploma through the Coupeville School District.
Students age sixteen and older, enrolled in Open Den, choose to achieve educational goals at their own pace and on a highly-flexible school schedule. Although many students exceed expectations, the minimum requirements to remain enrolled include attending school at least two-hours a month and completing one high school course or other indicator of academic progress every three months.
In addition, students participating in this program are supported by a partnership withOpen Den Island County through a student support advocate. Claire Commons provides students assistance and support with personal and emotional needs. She works to coordinate community resources for any student needs. We also have a strong partnership with Work Source, allowing our students to access employment assistance and paid internships.
